APPLE SAUCE

HOMEMADE APPLE SAUCE CAN RIVAL ANY STOREBOUGHT.

1-2 cups, 30 minutes

Ingredients:

3-4 apples, McIntosh or Golden preferred but any work!,  peeled, cored, and sliced
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
Lemon
Salt

The Blistered Peppers Take:

What I love about homemade applesauce is that 1. It’s easy, and 2. You’re in total control of the result. You like it chunky, cool, use a fork to mash it. Smooth? Use a blender! Want it to be a little more sweet and a little less savory? Great, add some extra sugar!

The best part, though, really is that it’s such a good use of apples. Especially during the fall when everyone and their mother goes apple picking OR your CSA overloads you with apples. This is the dish for you. It’s also great for apples that are a bit over ripe. And like almost every Blistered Peppers recipe, applesauce is customizable. Don’t like McIntosh? Use Pink Lady. You’re a sour lover? Throw in some Granny Smith. When it comes to apples the options are really endless. The flavor will just change slightly depending on the apple.

We tend to forget about applesauce once we’re adults so it may seem like an odd recipe to make, but it’s actually a great side dish to so many savory meals. Brisket and latkes or even an accoutrement to an amazing roast pork tenderloin. But also, once chilled, throw some extra cinnamon on top of a small bowl and it’s the perfect after dinner snack.

Change it up this summer and cook up some applesauce. Added bonus: your house will smell amazing! Let me know which apples you chose and send me a pic. Can’t wait to see what you think.

Steps:

  1. Peel, core, and slice the apples about 1/4 inch thick. Highly recommend an apple corer/slicer

  2. Place the apples, sugar, cinnamon, and 1/2 cup of water in a medium pot and bring to a boil. Once boiling, lower the heat, cover and cook for about 15 minutes until the apples are soft. You can use a potato masher or blender, but the apples should be soft enough that you can even mash them with a fork. Mash until you’ve reached desired consistency.

  3. Place the apple sauce in a bowl or airtight container if saving for later, and allow it to cool then refrigerate.

This apple sauce will keep for about a week.
