Taking your every day matcha up a notch.

Ingredients:

1 tsp matcha powder, I like Navita

1/4-1/2 cup milk of choice, I use Oatly
Optional: cinnamon

Vanilla Simple Syrup:
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup water
1 tsp vanilla extract

The Blistered Peppers Take:

We all know matcha is having a moment (as it should). I’ve even got a cookie recipe to prove it - bake ‘em up while you sit on your latte 😉. Matcha lattes are all the rave and so, y’all know me, I wanted to take it to another level. I adore a matcha latte. I drink them on the regular. In fact this drink was inspired by Matchaful’s Vanilla Zen. Although, my favorite place is Cha Cha Matcha - seriously, their Matcha Lemonade is the perfect summer version of a Matcha Latte (sans milk). During lockdown, we couldn’t just run out for Matchas on the reg, so I got really into making them at home too.

I watched a tutorial once where the person took their matcha making to a scientific level. Weighing the matcha on a scale. Doing some milk tricks. That’s not me. Don’t get me wrong I love some milk art and understand the need to measure ingredients (when absolutely necessary). But I want my caffeinated drinks to be ready quickly. This drink is simple, you just need the proper tool: a whisk, ideally a matcha whisk but any will work.

  • Side note: can we put this electric version on our Christmas lists in the middle of July? Please, enable me.

If you want to take the whisking, and pouring, to another level grab a metal sieve, pour your matcha into the sieve, and continue mixing until all the liquid pulls through the sieve smoothly. It definitely makes a difference, but is a little more timely, so completely fine to skip!

The great thing about an iced matcha latte is that frothing the milk won’t make much of a difference. Now, I already own the Nespresso milk frother, so I use the cold function and froth anyways but you can honestly pour your milk of choice over a cup of ice and then follow the steps below and will still have an incredible drink in hand.

Steps:

  1. Start by making the vanilla syrup. Add equal parts sugar and water to a small saucepan over low-medium heat. Stir with a fork or whisk until sugar is dissolved. Turn off the heat and add the vanilla extract. Stir well, then transfer to a heat proof container (I use mason jars), seal and let cool in the fridge.

  2. While the syrup chills, begin to make your matcha. In a small bowl, whisk together the matcha and water until the matcha powder is dissolved.

    • If you’re making a hot matcha, use hot water. If making a cold matcha, use room temp water.

  3. In a mason jar full of ice, pour the matcha, then add 2-3 teaspoons of vanilla syrup (depending on desired sweetness), a pinch of cinnamon, and frothed/un-frothed milk. Tightly screw on the mason jar lid and begin to shake the drink really well for about 30 seconds (the mixture will actually feel colder to touch and you’ll know you're done).

    • If you are using frothed milk, shake for a bit longer as this will actually give the milk an even frothier consistency.

Enjoy!
